Tug Sinks Off Coast

Two sailors died and 1 is missing after the tug they working on sank off our coast.

The accident happened in the area of Frying Pan Shoals as the tugboat towed a barge carrying 5.5 million gallons of petroleum by-products. The first distress calls came in late Tuesday night.

The 500-foot barge broke away from its the tugboat Valour, when the Valour turned around after losing a crew member. During the rescue attempt the tug began taking on water and sunk. A medical helicopter and another tug saved six of the nine crew members. Two died and a third is still missing.
